Fused: Pop Ideas + Classical Sounds

Artistry is elusive and defies definition. Still, the presence of artistry is unmistakable. Artists fuse high-level craftsmanship with humanity and honesty. This process of connecting one’s craft with ones’ inner self differs greatly depending on the artist; however, honesty and vulnerability remain a constant in the process. By viewing documentaries and interviews featuring Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Céline Dion, Quincy Jones and Audra McDonald, we take a relevant and creative look into the connections between music, thought, feeling and society and examine the meaning of the word artist. Delving into the personal perspective of varied popular artists will serve as the impetus for self-reflection regarding our individual, deliberate participation in both the world of arts and the world at large.

Recent presentations include Oberlin Conservatory, The University of Texas at Austin, Baylor University, University of Virginia Flute Forum and the New Jersey Flute Fair.

Let’s Talk

This four-part Facebook conversation series delved into the stories and lives of four black flutists, offering an unapologetic look at what it means to be black in classical music. We shared stories of humanity and disappointment; community and exclusion; clarity and frustration. In this series we unpacked and shared our experiences through honest, open conversation. Two of our conversations are below.

Honesty of Voice

Honesty of voice is the mark of an artist. The artists listed below are flutists and a Shaolin Warrior Monk, arts administrator, trailblazers, drum major (fourth female drum major of the UT Longhorn band since 1900), band director, entrepreneur and author.

Join the Northern Kentucky University Flute Studio as we learn from these artists! Each session is free and open to the public. Email bennettm17@nku.edu for the Zoom links.
